Guidelines For Required Repertoire -
2005 OPUS Chamber Music Competition

We will accept any piece of piano trio, string quartet or piano quintet in the Baroque, Classical or Romantic Period composed by, but not limited to Bach, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. You may choose any suitable timeless chamber music masterpiece known for its beauty, poetry, and passion and the way in which it uses strings in profound musical dialogue as your self-nominated piece. The following list serves as a guide for selection. Performers may also choose both pieces from this list. The length of each piece should not exceed 15 minutes.

Congratulations to all 71 campers for another successful year of learning on string music performance. Your effort and enthusiasm as well as the improvement in the one-week camp were evident in August 14 LISTEN TO OUR CHILDREN RECITAL. Every participant came out to be a winner with a beautiful certificate and a Peter and the Wolf poster by A'Daddario strings provided by American Music.

Specific awards recipients were selected by Music Director and Faculty and Tom Kenny, Cello, won the Best Musicianship Award with $150 Scholarship donated by Taiwan Benevolent Assn. of Chicago.

MUSIC DIRECTOR - Mr. Stephen Squires has begun his third year as Principal Conductor, Professor of Conducting and Chair of the Orchestral Instruments Department in the Music Conservatory at the Chicago College of Performing Arts, Roosevelt University. At CCPA, Mr. Squires conducts the Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. The CCPA Chamber Orchestra recently returned from a six-concert tour of Japan with Dale Clevenger, horn soloist, hosted by the prefecture of Hyogo.
Prior to this appointment, he served on the artist faculty of the School of Music at Northern Illinois University, where he received the “Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching” award. At NIU, Mr. Squires conducted the Philharmonic, Wind Ensemble and was Music Director of the Opera Workshop. During his nineteen-year tenure at NIU, Mr. Squires’ Wind Ensemble was a fifteen-time winner in the DownBeat magazine annual recording competition for "Best Collegiate Symphonic Band."

Mr. Squires received his musical training at the Preparatory School of the Eastman School of Music and the Crane School of Music, in his home state of New York. He earned his Master’s degree in Instrumental Conducting/Trumpet Performance at California State University, Northridge. He has studied conducting in seminars with Helmuth Rilling, Maurice Abravanel, Daniel Lewis and Tsung Yeh. Mr. Squires has conducted recordings for the Delos, Spring Hill (a division of EMI) and Centaur label, as well as a multi-disc set entitled “Music for Winds and Percussion” with the NIU Wind Ensemble on the MEDR label.

A conductor active in orchestral, wind, operatic and ballet music, Mr. Squires’ current professional appointments include Associate Conductor of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra (Rockford, IL), Principal Guest Conductor of the Millar Brass (Evanston, IL), and Conductor of the Salt Creek Ballet Orchestra (Hinsdale, IL). Mr. Squires has conducted numerous all-state and district orchestras and bands. In addition, he is an accomplished recital accompanist and freelance trumpeter.

MASTER STRINGS MUSIC CAMP - Two full weeks (10 days), 9am to 4 pm, Benedictine Univ. in Lisle, Aug 4-15.

TWO ORCHESTRAS - 44 x 2 = 88 students have been accepted = 48 violins, 13 violas, 20 celli, and 6 string double basses, and 1 harp. Each orchestra has approx. 10 chamber groups. Each student can play in a CHAMBER ENSEMBLES of quartets. Students who come prepared may be selected to play a SOLO in a master class. There are TECHNIQUE and MUSICIANSHIP classes plus time for recreations as well. The tuition includes 10 all-you-can-eat lunches in main cafeteria with large dietary choices.

Two Friday evening CONCERTS - in St. Procopius Abbey for Aug. 8 at 7:30PM and Aug. 15 at 8:15PM. Cypress Quartet will perform in both concerts. A tour of Benedictine Univ.'s Nature Museum is on Aug. 5. A workshop with electric-violinist Christian Howes is on Thurs. Aug. 14.

PHENOMENAL FACULTY AT MASTER STRINGS MUSIC CAMP -

*** MUISC DIRECTOR is CHARLES EMMONS, JR. whose experiences include teaching at INTERLOCHEN Arts Center for thirty (30) summers both as intermediate and symphonic orchestra conductor. Mr. Emmons was previously also the Orchestra Director of NEW TRIER, HIGHLAND and DEERFIELD high schools and currently serves as Director of String Education in Chicago's VanderCook School of Music. Mr. Emmons was the winner of:
- American String Teachers Association's Outstanding Illinois Public School Educator 1995
- Governor's Award and Proclamation for Excellence in Teaching from Governor George Ryan and the State of Illinois, April 23, 2001.

OUR CAMP FACULTY IS PROFESSIONAL PERFORMERS WITH DEMONSTRATED TEACHING ABILITY:

*** CYPRESS QUARTET has been contracted as teaching faculty as well as performers in Camp's Friday concert. Coming from SAN FRANCISCO, CYPRESS QUARTET is a highly regarded ensemble and will spend time at our Camp after their impressive performance at RAVINIA on May 2nd to a sold-out crowd. The CYPRESS QUARTET has performed to great acclaim worldwide. Praised by the Los Angeles Times for its "musical astuteness and virtuoso resources," the Quartet has been featured in Chamber Music Magazine as a "Generation X Ensemble to Watch" and has made regular appearances on National Public Radio's "Performance Today."

CYPRESS QUARTET's recent CD release was featured in the 'Time Traveler' article in the current STRINGS magazine of May/June 2003 (pg.74). "The seven-year-old Cypress engagingly transports the listener through over 100 years of string-quartet music, high-lighting the works of Haydn, Ravel, and Schulhoff. .... The result is an evocative and wonderfully cohesive program. .. that shows this quartet's knack for exploring contemporary music while remaining true to its motto - revitalizing tradition." *** CONDUCTORS Faculty -
Mr. JOSEPH MALMQUIST is Conant High School Orchestra Director and Director of the Schaumburg Youth Symphony Orchestra. The Schaumburg Youth Symphony Orchestra program garnered two national awards, including first place in the Performing Arts Category of the 1999 Hometown Video Festival, sponsored by the Alliance for Community Media, and second place in the Performing Arts Category in the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA) 1999 Programming Awards. The Schaumburg Youth Orchestra was also cited with an Honorable Mention at the 1998 U.S. Conference of Mayor's Livability Awards Program. .Most recently, the program received the honor of being named 2001 Youth Orchestra of the Year by the Illinois Council of Orchestras.

Joseph R. Malmquist received his BA with honors from Western Illinois University and his Master's with highest honors in performance/string development from the University of Wisconsin (Madison). He was a two time winner of the concerto competition, with appearances as conductor of the WIU Symphony, and conductor of the graduate/faculty Chamber Orchestra. Other conducting duties have included the District 211 Honors and Chamber Orchestras, the Conant High School Orchestras, the Schaumburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, guest conductor of the U-46 middle school string festival, and the 1987 Wisconsin All-State Music Camp. In addition to his conducting duties, Mr. Malmquist is a violinist with several orchestras in the Chicago area. Positions include1st violin section of the El gin Symphony Orchestra, former principal 2nd violin for the Illinois Chamber Symphony, subbing with Rockford, Lake Forest, Hinsdale Chamber, Asssistant Concertmaster Salt Creek Ballet Orchestra, and a member of the Solisti di Camera string quartet. He has also received several honors including the Music Union's Award for Outstanding Contributions to Education, numerous selections to "Who's Who Among America's Finest Teachers" and was awarded the Mary Hoffman Award for Excellence in Education by the Illinois Music Educators Association.

Mr. KEVAN KOSOBAYASHI is our 2nd conductor. Mr. Kosobayashi is a native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, where, from the age of four, he studied violin at the MacPhail Center for the Arts and participated in the center’s Preparatory Program. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and Violin Performance from Northwestern University in 1993. While at Northwestern, he was a recipient of both the Elsie Eckstein Prize and George Patterson Owen Award, and was selected for membership in Pi Kappa Lambda, the national honorary music fraternity. His Master of Arts degree is in Music Education from Teachers College-Columbia University in New York City. Mr. Kosobayashi is currently director of orchestras at Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates High Schools, in addition to being conductor and director of the Schaumburg Youth Orchestra Chamber Strings. His past teaching experience includes leading both the middle and high school orchestras in Batavia, Illinois, and teaching English in Hiroshima, Japan as a participant in the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program, a foreign language and cultural exchange program under the auspices of the Japanese Government. Mr. Kosobayashi performs with the Evanston-based I Maestri String Quartet and the Trinity Community Philharmonic Orchestra in Deerfield.


*** VIOLIN Faculty -
Ms. CECILY WARD - Cypress Quartet; music school trainings in - Eastman/Cleveland. Cecily Ward began studying music in Salt Lake City, Utah at the age of four. She took lessons in violin, piano and composition and her teachers included members of the Utah Symphony and the University of Utah music faculty. At thirteen, she attended the INTERLOCHEN Arts Academy in Interlochen, Michigan where she was concertmaster of the orchestra. Ms. Ward went on to study the violin with Donald Weilerstein at the Eastman School of Music and at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and chamber music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She has participated in the Norfolk, Banff and Taos Chamber Music festivals and was an Aspen Festival Fellow. Ms. Ward has recorded Vivaldi's 'Summer' with the chamber orchestra Stratos on the Warner Bros. label.

Mr. TOM STONE - Cypress Quartet; music school trainings in -Eastman/Cleveland. Tom Stone was born in Chicago where he studied music with Hilel Kagan. Mr. Stone pursued his musical studies by attending the Eastman School of Music in Rochester and the Cleveland Institute of Music. His major teachers have included Donald Weilerstein, Zvi Zeitlin, Gyorgy Sebok, Bonnie Hampton and Merry Peckham. Mr. Stone has performed with many distinguished artists including Awadagin Pratt, Leon Fleisher, Bonnie Hampton, Paul Hersh, Ian Swensen, and Donald Weilerstein.

Prof. CARL JOHNSTON - Violinist Carl Johnston is a veteran Chicago performer and educator. He has taught privately for the past 25 years at the DePaul University, American Conservatory of Music, VanderCook College of Music and studio currently at his home. His performance experiences range from Concertmaster of the Mozart Sinfonia, Associate Concertmaster of the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, former Concertmaster of the Northwest Indiana Symphony, member of the Nashville Chamber Orchestra, Vienna Waltz Ensemble and the Chicago Sinfonietta to performing in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, and the Ravinia Festival Orchestrra. Mr. Johnston's teachers include Raymond Niwa and Dorothy DeLay. He received his BM and MM from the Chicago Musical college at Roosevelt University.

Ms. CAROLINE CHIN - Violinist, music school trainings in - Julliard/Indiana. Caroline Chin has performed throughout the United States at the Daley Center, the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington DC during the "Imagination Celebration", and at CARNEGIE Hall. She has toured with the Betty Haag Academy of Performing Arts throughout Italy, France, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Moscow, Kazakhstan, and China. She has performed with the North Suburban Symphony of Lake Forest and with the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra. She was concertmaster of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO) and performed as a soloist with them at Grant Park. She attended the Aspen Music Festival, Norfolk Summer Music Festival, and the Taos Chamber Music Festival. She studied with Betty Haag-Kuhnke for 13 years at the Academy of Performing Arts of Roosevelt University where Caroline also taught for seven (7) years. Caroline received her Bachelors Degree from Indiana University School of Music while studying with Miriam Fried and is completing her Masters Degree at Juilliard with Robert Mann. She has also worked with Shmuel Ashkenasi, Hyo Kang, Dorothy DeLay, Donald Weilerstein, Robert McDonald, Philippe Graffin, Colin Carr and Charles Neidich.

*** VIOLA Faculty -
Prof. JASON ECONOMIDES (also teaches violin) - Head of Strings, Concertmaster, Alma College, Mich. Jason has been the assistant principal second violinist for the Grand Rapids Symphony and concertmaster for the Elgin Symphony Orchestra. His performance venues have included the Chicago Opera Theatre, New World Symphony, Lansing Symphony, Flint Symphony and Ann Arbor Chamber Orchestra. For the past 12 years he has operated a private studio in Grand Rapids and was an instructor of violin at Aquinas College and Calvin College. He has been an active clinician for several mid-Michigan competitions and youth ensembles.

Mr. ETHAN FILNER - Cypress Quartet; music school trainings in - Indiana/New England. A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Ethan Filner joined the Cypress String Quartet in 2001. Mr. Filner attended Indiana University, the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, England and the New England Conservatory. He has participated in the International Musicians Seminar-Prussia Cove (Cornwall, England) and the Aspen Music Festival. He has performed with Miriam Fried, James Campbell and with Sir Colin Davis at the 2000 BBC Proms in Royal Albert Hall. In 1998, Mr. Filner performed a series of chamber concerts in Helsinki, Finland with fellow Guildhall students and faculty as guests of the British Embassy. He has performed as a member of the Kuttner Quartet, the Etive Ensemble, and the Sigma String Quartet. Mr. Filner's primary teachers included James Dunham, Roger Chase, Tasso Adamopoulos and Atar Arad.

*** CELLO Faculty -
Ms. JENNIFER KLOETZEL, Cypress Quartet. A graduate of the Juilliard School and a Fulbright Grant winner, cellist Jennifer Kloetzel has concertized extensively in Europe and Asia, as well as across the United States. She has appeared as guest artist with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and has collaborated with distinguished artists David Golub, Wu Han, Heiichiro Ohyama, Gary Hoffman and Paul Neubauer. After she performed with pianist Andre Previn at the La Jolla Chamber Music Festival in August 1992, Ms. Kloetzel was invited to appear as one of his select "Rising Stars" at the 1993 and 1994 Caramoor Festivals in New York. Ms. Kloetzel has appeared at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, the Sarasota and Aspen Music Festivals, the Prague Mozart Academy, and performed as cellist of the Cassatt Quartet during the 1995-96 season.

Ms. PAULA KOSOWER - Paula Kosower is a professional cellist who has her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from IU having studied with Janos Starker. She has completed all course work on her Doctorate from NU and has studied with Hans Jensen. She is teaching at NU, Trinity International University and VanderCook College of Music. She subsitutes regularly with the CSO and is a frequent chamber music and solo performer in Chicago.

*** STRING DOUBLE BASS Faculty -
Ms. JUDITH HANNA - Judith Hanna is an accomplished pianist, orchestral bassist and educator. Ms. Hanna received her Bachelor of Music degree in both performance and education from School of Music, Ithaca College. She has performed extensively throughout the Midwest with such organizations as The Chautauqua Ensemble, Rosewood Trio, Lake Forest Symphony, Illinois Chamber Symphony, South Bend Symphony, Springfield Symphony, Elgin Symphony and Fort Wayne Philharmonic and the Milwaukee Symphony. Through a Civic Orchestra fellowship Judith has just completed her masters of music degree at Northwestern University.

Ms. Hanna, principal bassist with the Civic Orchestra from 1994-96, has had the pleasure of working with such distinguished conductors as Daniel Barenboim, George Solti, Zubin Mehta, Pierre Boulez and Neemi Yarvi and has recently performed as an extra with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She also performs for the International Music Foundation (supplies programs for the Chicago Public Schools), is on the faculty of the Merit Music Program, teaching Orchestral Bass and Music Theory, the Sherwood Conservatory and has a private studio in Oak Park. She has taught at Concordia College, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Birch Creek Music Farm and Lagrange School District as a string specialist and was the conductor of the West Suburban Youth Orchestra for seven seasons. Her teachers include Warren Benfield, Joseph Guastefeste, Jeff Bradetich and Mike Hovnanian. Ms. Hanna is currently professor of Double Bass at Illinois Wesleyan University.

Chicago Chamber Musicians/Chicago String Quartet invites students to this free concert in Westmont on Wed Sept 25, 7 pm at the Chinese Cultural Service Center, 750 Pasquinelli Dr #212, Westmont. Directions: About 3 blocks north on Pasquinelli at intersection of Ogden and Pasquinelli (one light west of Rt. 83 on Ogden) - on the west side in the inner building. The phone number is 630.323.2440. They will present Schubert's Piano Trio in B-flat. There will be a reception afterwards where the sudents can meet the musicians.

OPUS sponsors a special performance in the 7th and 8th Grade Orchestra Festival at Madison Jr. High, 7:30 pm. East Meets West Music Arts chamber musicians will treat the audience with a violin solo (by Ms. Manman Jiang) and Erhu (Chinese Violin soloist Ms. Jing Wang) and strings/harp under the directorship of Dr. Fengshi Yang. Admission is free.

Contact your orchestra director for the D203 Summer Orchestra Program which runs from June 11 through July 10 for a fee of $50.00. Three skill levels on Mon Wed Thur mornings at Washington Jr. High - one year of playing group 8:30-9:30 am, two or three years of playing group 9;30-10:30 am, four or more years of playing 10:30-11:30 am.

Clinician is Martin Fischer, a professional violist, was principal with New Yrk Oratorio Society, the Orkney Springs Inst Orchestra and Rhode Island Philharmonic.

Mr. Art Foley - Orchestra Director at Kennedy Jr. High is offering his students two Special Offers (by Feb. 1st). #1 - Fiddling Class - Violins only, Thurs 3:00 to 4:00 pm. For students interested in learning fiddling techniques. #2- Electric Bass Class - Fridays 3:00 to 3:45 pm, fo students who have a own bass guitar and would like to work on the basics (dates are Feb. 7, 14, 21; March 7 and 21).
