OPUS Music Director
From the Music Director...
As I considered what I might highlight about the OPUS experience, several thoughts
came to mind: I could elaborate on the amazing credentials and experience of the
OPUS camp faculty. Or I could discuss the value of participation in the arts and
the benefits of developing music skills. Or I could describe the unique joys and
growth opportunities inherent in chamber music-making.
But I decided that, whereas all of those considerations are important, it is the
people connected with OPUS who make it a special experience that young people are
eager to repeat year after year. From the visionary founder Linda Yu to the creative
and hard-working leadership team (Julia Challinor, Director; Vivienne Venderley,
Librarian and Faculty Coordinator, Robert Sacks, Piano Coordinator); to the supportive
OPUS board and amazingly generous volunteers; to the energetic TAs, top-notch faculty,
and vibrant ensemble-in-residence, OPUS consists of people who are delighted to
invest their time, talents, passion and energy in the OPUS campers. Because they
believe that the chamber music experience is a valuable one for young people (whether
or not they plan to pursue a career in music), and because they value the positive
attitude and sense of community at OPUS, they contribute selflessly to the week-long
event. Students therefore have the opportunity to become part of the resulting community
and to accept the challenge to stretch and grow within that supportive environment.
As a young person, I had the opportunity to experience a music camp, one that was
able to offer similar community and encouragement to campers, along with fine instruction
and the modeling of excellence in music-making. My participation there positively
affected my approach to music and my understanding of it, as well as my self-concept
and confidence. That experience is part of the reason that I am thrilled to play
a part in the OPUS Chamber Music Camp.
