O.P.U.S. (Orchestra Parents / Patrons' United Support) is a charitable,
not-for-profit volunteer organization formed in 2000. OPUS was initially founded
by parents from Naperville School District 203 to support school orchestras in Naperville.
Their initial goal was to give support to the local district orchestra teachers,
and to encourage students to develop their skills and appreciation of music. Since,
OPUS has broadened its reach to the entire Naperville community and the western
suburbs of Chicago. Today its activities and events involve parents, music professionals,
members of the community, and student families who act as music ambassadors to their
respective schools.
OPUS Mission
OPUS has the mission of stimulating and promoting students' interest in chamber
and orchestral music learning, and therefore to advance students' musical achievements
in musical performance and sustain their music enjoyment and appreciation. The mission
of the chamber music program is to expand and improve the instrumental skills of
each student through performance of orchestral and chamber music. The OPUS programs
are also designed to encourage students to grow socially by promoting friendships
in an honest and ethical environment.
The first OPUS Music Camp was held in the summer of 2003. This project initiated
what has become a wonderful collaboration between OPUS and
Benedictine University. The OPUS distinguished guest artists and faculty
concerts have drawn favorable attention to Benedictine University as a place for
the study and development of chamber music. Some camp students and staff have enrolled
in the university's academic programs as a result of the exposure through the OPUS
Chamber Music Camp.
